Royston town council by-election – 24th July 2025.

Peter has lived in Royston for over five years and has been working in Quality Control at a local electronics company for over a decade. As your town councillor, he will champion social and environmental issues within the Town Council. Even a single Green on the town council can shift the debate and provide an alternative voice to represent local people passionate about their community.

In a statement for the Comet newspaper, Peter wrote:

I’m running to be on Royston Town Council because Royston is a very special place for me, I’ve worked here for over a decade and have lived in the town for 5 years. Royston has been let down by years of council inaction and controlled decline.

Community facilities like the Picture Palace cinema have been shut and events like the Kite Festival have been cancelled. This has marked a decline in community life, and an increase in social isolation and loneliness. I believe that the council can make it easier for community groups to form and to use the wonderful facilities that Royston already has, like the cinema and the empty shops that are becoming increasingly common on our high street.

Since becoming part of the Royston community, I have worked with the Green Party due to our shared principles of social well-being, economic equality, and environmental justice.I would be very honoured to represent Royston Palace in Royston Town Council, and I believe that even one lone Green voice on the Council can change the debate, challenge the status quo, and ensure local people concerned about climate change and passionate about their community have an effective voice within the Town government.

I am enthusiastic about creating a more sustainable positive future for Royston where everyone has the opportunity to live their best life.

We would like to thank everyone across North Hertfordshire and Stevenage who voted for the Green Party in the Hertfordshire County Council elections that took place recently. We were pleased to give everyone in North Herts and Stevenage the chance to vote Green this year, so an additional thank you to all our candidates.

In North Herts, 3065 people voted Green, no councillor was elected on more votes than this.

In Stevenage, 1325 people voted Green, only one councillor in Stevenage was elected on more votes than this.

We were pleased to give voters something positive to vote for, but also sad that those people who chose to vote Green do not have any representation on Hertfordshire County Council from North Herts or Stevenage.
On a more positive note, it is great to see that there are now 5 Green Party Councillors on Hertfordshire County Council, 2 from Hertford, 2 from Ware and 1 from St Albans

The North Herts & Stevenage Green Party has previously supported LADACAN and Luton Green Party on their efforts to stop the expansion of Luton Airport.

In response to the Government’s decision to allow an increase in capacity from 19 million to 32 million passengers a year, the Luton Green Party said it was “outraged” by the decision, calling it a “move that shamelessly puts corporate interests above people’s lives”. They explain:

“Residents are under constant attack with flightpaths roaring directly over homes, schools, and parks and noise so extreme it ruins lives. Studies prove long-term exposure to noise cuts life expectancy, yet Ministers don’t seem to care. This expansion isn’t progress – it’s a disaster for our community and our planet.”

Residents in the North Herts and Stevenage will also be affected by this decision as many of our neighbourhoods fall under the flight paths of Luton airport.

Local campaign group LADACAN, which has been actively opposing expansion of the airport for many years, has published an analysis of the claims made to support expansion at https://ladacan.org/labour-dumps-environment/

Hertfordshire County Council has announced a new wave of consultations to implement safer streets, including the introduction of 20mph zones and other road calming measures, in Baldock and the Chells area (Stevenage). This follows implementation of this scheme in Central Hitchin and the Bedwell Area in Stevenage. Local residents are encouraged to show their support for the plans in their area.

Green Councillors understand the importance of these consultations and plans to make our communities safer. We are committed to transform local transport, including through safer routes to schools.

The proposed plans aim to improve road safety, create calmer streets and encourage more walking and cycling. For these plans to go ahead, at least 10% of residents need to respond, of which 50% of responses need to be in favour.

The Baldock and Chells area consultations close on 17 March 2025. You can have your say directly by clicking on the below links for each area:

Hertfordshire County Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has committed to working with partners and residents to tackle climate change and its impacts across the county. They have opened a new consultation to get residents’ views on sustainability and climate change ambitions.

All Hertfordshire residents are invited to fill out their online survey here: https://surveys.hertfordshire.gov.uk/s/7INFTR/

An accessible version of the survey is available here: https://surveys.hertfordshire.gov.uk/s/MMMFLN/

The survey closes on March 21st.

This is an important survey and will help the county council understand what people think about climate change, how to better communicate with residents about sustainability, and how to get more people involved in taking action.

You can find out more about sustainability in Hertfordshire and what the county council is doing to tackle climate change here: https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/microsites/sustainable-hertfordshire/sustainable-hertfordshire.aspx

There will be a by-election for a new County Councillor for the Bedwell area of Stevenage on Thursday 29th August. We are please to announce that our candidate will be Balgiisa Sheik Ahmed. Balgiisa has said:

“Passionate about community well-being, I am committed to making Stevenage a safer and fairer place for everyone. I have over a decade of experience in higher education and legal research and track record in fighting for a better future for young people.

I live in Stevenage with my partner Sebastiaan. Since becoming a part of this community, I’ve become more involved in the Green Party because of our shared principles of environmental justice, economic equality and social wellbeing.

I’m an academic lawyer, meaning I focus on legal research and education as well as preparing the next generation of lawyers for practice. I also run my department at the university so I have plenty of leadership experience. As an academic I’m very detail oriented, as a lawyer I’m an excellent advocate and as a manager, I have strong organisational skills.

Yet if you want to know who I am at my core, I am the eldest daughter of eight, raised by a former refugee. My mother cleaned schools for a living and depended on a strong community to help raise her family. This is where my life long commitment to social justice, community bonds and sustainability started.

By standing as your Green candidate, I aim to champion sustainability, justice, and community cohesion. There are no individual issues in Stevenage, all issues are ours to share and solve together.”

Make your voice for sustainability and justice heard by voting for Balgiisa in Bedwell!
