Ecotips from Autumn 2021

25th October 2021:-

“Thinking of light in the darkness (the clocks go back 1 hour on Saturday):  Have you switched to low energy bulbs (including outside lights)? Could you ask your employer to do the same? It will save energy and also money on your bills : win-win!”

18th October 2021:-

“We are in a real Climate Emergency.  Could you raise awareness and take part at 6pm on Saturday 30 October on the eve of COP26 in Clang for the Climate? Please tell your neighbours why you are making this noise!! Churches have also been asked to ring their bells! https://clangforclimate.org/

11th October 2021:-

“Join in with #BillionSeedChallenge, coordinated by Together  https://together.org.uk/2021/09/13/billionseedchallenge/  in the run up to COP26 to help flower up our local communities- lots of charities and organisations are part of this campaign already!”

4th October 2021:-

“Get some much needed hope and be inspired that humans can help restore our damaged planet by watching The Earthshot Prize on BBC iPlayer. The UK’s stunning rewilding on the Knepp estate in Sussex was featured in the first programme (3rd Oct) and the award ceremony is to be shown on 17th October. BBC 4’s “Restoring the Earth” is also well worth a watch. Eco systems can be restored very quickly when the will and money is there!”

27th September 2021:-

“If you can afford it, try and buy FairTrade goods as often as you can: bananas, chocolate, tea, coffee and many more, as this gives people in the poorer Global South fair wages creating a more equal and more sustainable world as a whole. Look at Traidcraft and Oxfam for more products.”

20th September 2021:-

“Why not have a “Use up left over veg” day towards the end of each week, throwing veg into a pot to make soup or a casserole, adding herbs or spices and some beans or lentils for protein, before you waste the old veg a few days later because it has gone mouldy at the back of the fridge. Food waste contributes greatly to climate change – rotting fruit and veg produces methane which contributes to global overheating, plus any produce wasted means that  the energy , fertilisers and water used to grow those crops has been completely wasted too.”

13th September:-

“Try and mention eco things you are doing personally in various conversations eg if you are chatting about gardening, mention how useful it is to have a water butt or good for the bees to have a patch of native flowers: little by little hopefully more people will be inspired to do eco things themselves. Don’t underestimate people power!”

6th September 2021:-

“Find out what’s going on near you for the Climate Coalition’s Action  Great Big Green Week 18-26 Sept or why not create your own event  to celebrate action on the Climate Crisis and add it to the national list!  https://greatbiggreenweek.com/

30th August 2021:-

“Take a walk round your local park, footpaths or green spaces – it’s free, healthy and connects you with nature which is so vital to our existence on our damaged and stressed planet. Then wonder what you could do to help your environment thrive”
