Star Count with CPRE
Article submitted by Deolinda Eltringham, Candidate for Hitchin Highbury and Hitchin South on March 10th
We are excited to share with you the details of the CPRE’s annual Star Count event that is taking place between 26 February and 6 March.
CPRE (The Countryside Charity) are asking for your help by counting stars to help measure the level of light pollution on the ability to enjoy our dark skies.
Become a citizen scientist and choose a clear night between 26 February and 6 March to look at the constellation Orion and let CPRE know how many stars you can count. CPRE are working with the British Astronomical Association to provide the necessary support for this activity. They will also share a form with you to send your count.
You can sign up at Sign up for Star Count 2022 (cpre.org.uk) .
Our built environment emits light which affects our view of truly dark skies, it also has a major impact on day/night rhythm of wildlife making it more difficult for them to thrive, and has a similar impact of our ability to benefit from restorative rest at night. Your results from Star Count will help CPRE make a map of the areas with the highest light pollution. They plan to present the results to local councils and work with them to address this issue.
