Fight Climate Change by Planting Trees

Fight Climate Change by Planting Trees

Article submitted by Kruna Vukmirovic

There is always an opportunity to do more for the environment and planting trees is one such activity that will benefit the generations to come.

Trees fight climate change by capturing carbon through photosynthesis and the entire woodland ecosystem including the living wood, roots, leaves and deadwood all play a big role.  Young woods with mixed native species can capture 400+ tonnes carbon per hectare. In addition to locking up carbon, trees prevent flooding, reduce pollution and keep soil nutrient-rich. Carbon accumulation also continues in old-growth forests. By planting new native woodland with UK-grown trees, we can boost biodiversity.

Only 13% of the UK’s land area is covered by trees compared to an average 37% of EU. According to Woodland Trust we need 1.5 million hectares of additional woodland to help us reach net zero carbon.

Advice on Planting Trees

The best time to plant trees is when they are dormant between November and March. And since different trees have different purposes and needs, you should select your species according to the type of soil and what you want from trees.  By including a broad range of native tree species you will make your planted trees more resilient to pollution, climate change and disease.

The North Herts and Stevenage Green Party have local experts who can help you with advice on tree planting. Our local campaigners have supported hundreds of trees being planted over the last years and you can contact us for more information at info@northherts.greenparty.org.uk.

Finally, the UK’s largest annual tree celebration National Tree Week takes place from Saturday 27 November to Sunday 5 December. Marking the start of the winter tree planting season, this event is an opportunity to celebrate and plant trees across the country.
